The Wales flanker allegedly kneed Scotland full-back Chris Paterson in the head during the Blues' 18-17 Heineken Cup victory over Edinburgh last Saturday. Television evidence suggests the 35-year-old has a serious case to answer and Blues coach David Young said he would be holding talks with the Wales star and the region's chief executive Robert Norster about the matter. "We are going to have a chat, myself, Bob and Martyn later to go through what we feel is the best course of action," he said. "But we will sit down and discuss what we think is the way forward." Former Wales captain Young admitted they were already planning for Friday's Pool One clash with Castres in France without Williams. But Young said this was not because Williams could be banned, but down to the fact the British Lion had to go to Ireland for the European Rugby Cup disciplinary panel hearing.
"We are pretty much planning without Martyn because we have a team run on Thursday and that is pretty much it really," he said. "We have cracked on without him today." Williams was cited by independent match commissioner Tony Lanaway. The International Rugby Board's recommended sanction for the type of offence Williams is accused of perpetrating is a suspension ranging from between three weeks and a year, depending on its severity. Young insisted Williams' past disciplinary record â he has been dismissed just once during a magnificent 15-year senior career â shows he is a clean player. Indeed, just last season, the 95-times capped Pontypridd product was presented with a fair play award by ERC. Williams was selected as the fairest and most sportsmanlike player in the 15-year history of European Cup rugby. The award citation said about Williams: It is widely felt he is the embodiment of the player who upholds the values of the game of rugby.
"They've both had scans," said Young. "We haven't had the results but obviously it's looking extremely unlikely that they'll be available. Gethin is probably nearer to it than Dan. He rolled his ankle. It's nothing long-term, nothing that's going to put him out for weeks on end. If he's not right for this week, I'm sure he'll be right the week after. Dan could be out for two weeks, although he's walking about on it." The Blues are second in Pool One behind Northampton Saints, who beat Castres 18-14 at Franklin's Gardens, on points difference. Young has called for an improved performance at Castres, saying: "We know we didn't play anywhere near where we would have liked to against Edinburgh. I rate Edinburgh as a team and they play some quality rugby but most of our problems we caused ourselves.
"They only made two clean line-breaks all day. Everything else was either from a dropped ball or turnover from us. Our accuracy wasn't where it has been in the past, both at set-piece time and going through the phases. We didn't allow ourselves to build any pressure or momentum. Any time we went over four phases, we either had a penalty or came away with a try. We had something like nine clean line-breaks â which is big in any game â and we were one pass away from scoring two or three tries. I'm pleased we are creating opportunities. We've just got to make sure we are a bit more accurate and come away with something."
