I am privileged to have a good team that joins me for make-up competition throughout Asia and will gladly share winning tips to prepare you for your next make up competition.
1. Know your theme well
You must understand the theme really well before you begin preparing for it. Make sure the colors, hair style and a model's outfit complements each other. Keep the colors natural, so that the model's feature can shine through. Let the make up speak for itself. Familiarize yourself with the tools and make up set you are using - the texture, the colors so that you can gauge how they will turn out and affect the model's looks. Do not be afraid to bring props. For example the theme is nature; you can bring some tropical fruits or a simple background theme that reflects nature.
2. Time yourself
It is very important that you are able to complete the look within the given time. Practice as often as you can before the competition and time yourself. Get used to the time frame and you won't feel so nervous on stage. Label your tools properly and always put them at the same place in your make up box so you do not waste precious time looking for your tools. I would suggest you practice at least 10 times before a competition. If a problem crops up when you are on stage, think quickly and find the next best option, do not waste time.
3. Choose a good model
When choosing your model, make sure you get someone who has flawless skin and beautiful as that will save you time preparing the face base. Make up will go on smoothly and the colors show better too. Make sure the other details, hair and outfit and bring out the model's best features. I would suggest if you can choose someone who is beautiful and tall as humans are always attracted to beautiful people and judges are humans too.
4. Plan ahead
Prepare a sketch of your creation in advance so you can refer to it. As I know there are no rules that you cannot refer to your creation. Take it step by step so you won't leave out anything. It will help you calm when you are on stage and won't have problems sticking to the time line.
5. Do your homework
The themes tend to be quite abstract, so it is up to you to figure out a strong concept. Surf the internet, look through magazines or watch TV to get ideas. Keep practicing until you prefect your techniques.
6. Use your imagination.
Sometimes you just get better results if you just go with the flow. Follow your instincts and let your imagination run wild. You tend to get more creative ideas what way and that is what judges look for.
