Poison ivy (scientific name Toxicodendron radicans) is arguably one of the more well-known plants in the field of botany. It is especially known for its ability to cause skin rashes through a skin irritant called urushiol. It is a woody vine comprised of leaves, and predominantly grows across most of North America, Canada (with the exception of Newfoundland), and most states of America, apart from California, Alaska, and Hawaii.
The plant is pretty much known for its three-leaf pattern, something found in all of its breeds. It is, in actuality, a type of shrub - it only grows up to 30 centimeters in height. One may be fooled by the amount of the breed they see in one area alone - however, here's a surprise: the huge patches are only really one plant that has crept up from underground.
Most of the time, this plant thrives in outer rocky areas, as well as open spaces and fields. While it will most certainly not survive in a purely desert area, it does not require as much soil moisture as other similar plants. Most people normally resolve to stay away from poison ivy to avoid catching the rash that it can cause. However, what many people don't know is that we are the only ones who seem to be afflicted with the skin rash whenever we come into contact with the plant. Most animals, such as deer, benefit from it by eating its leaves, while other animals chew on the berries, including mice and squirrels.
The plant changes appearances throughout seasons. The leaves tend to stay green most of the year, but have hints of red when they first start blooming again in the spring. It is most beautiful in the fall, where the leaves turn an absolutely stunning shade of scarlet red. So you see, despite the negative notion many people have of this plant, many people still come to appreciate its beauty - in fact, someone once found it so marvelous that upon seeing the fabulous autumn colors of it leaves, he immediately took some home with him, and as such, the British are now also privileged to have this plant in their surrounding area.
In conclusion, poison ivy would be a nice addition to anyone's garden, but of course, one would have to take precautions to make sure that no one is at risk of constantly getting rashes. If there are children in the house, it is not really advisable to keep this in your garden. However, if you own a private garden that is just for viewing, this may be a valuable and pretty plant to add to your collection.
