Lighthouses are tall buildings equip with a lantern room at the top which gives off a beam of light aiding travelers in their journeys. In ancient time, they functioned to guide mariners into the harbor. Modernly, they have become very useful as a warning signal for dangerous coastlines, shores, and reefs. Lighthouses are appreciated for both their usefulness as a guide for sea travelers and as historic landmarks of beauty and safety.
West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is located at the easternmost point of the US, in Maine. It is one of the only two US lighthouses that contain the distinctive red and white stripped bands. This lighthouse marks the entry point to the Passamaquoddy Bay, which is very dangerous to mariners.
The first West Quoddy Head Lighthouse was constructed in 1808, after the local citizens petitioned the government in 1806. Congress decided to allocate $ 5,000 for the construction. This lighthouse was one of the first stations to have a fog bell and steam whistle. The fog bell was particularly necessary because this area was clogged with fog for nearly half the time during summer months.
The West Quoddy Head Lighthouse was replaced in 1831, due to the deterioration of the old one. Congress, again allocated funds for the replacement to be constructed by Joseph Berry. This now rubblestone tower went through many necessary changes throughout the years including a replacement of the West Quoddy Station that was found in a terrible condition in 1872.
West Quoddy Head Lighthouse was known for its automated flashing white light every 15 seconds; but the sequence has shifted to an unusual pattern of on and off for several seconds at a time. This lighthouse is still operational and continues to use the 1858 lens.
Models of the West Quoddy Lighthouse as well as many others are available for outdoor yard decorations.
