With the Fifa World Cup less than a year away, many of us are still asking questions about South Africa.

Is it safe to go?

Will I be a victim to crime?

What about apartheid, it's only been 15 years, is it truly over?

These Xenophobic attacks, will I be attacked for the fact that I am a foreigner?

These questions are perfectly normal for the fact that we would like to feel safe and secure when visiting other countries.

We search the web for answers and what we search for is what we hear about this country, which is mainly crime and Apartheid.

What we find when we search for these topics is stats about the crime rate or we read stories about the apartheid era and watch disturbing movies on 'Youtube'.

This would clearly make anyone think twice about visiting South Africa.

But what should we really be asking?

The fact still remains that the football World Cup will be held, so no matter what you have read or heard, if you got tickets to go support your country in the greatest sporting event on the globe, you most probably will be on the plane next June.

Just maybe we have been searching for the wrong answers?

What should we be looking for?

What other events have been held in South Africa?

You start searching the web and find that in the past 15 years major sporting events have been held year in and year out without any incident regarding crime.

Be it rugby, cricket, golf or A1 driving or African cup of nation's football, South Africa's track record of hosting sports events speaks for itself.

The Indian premier cricket league, Super 14 rugby, tri nations, confederations cup, British lions tour and the ICC world championship cricket are all the major events listed for 2009.

You do a little more research and find that over 10 000 exchange students come from all over the world to take part in internships or to enroll in Universities from 3 to 12 months.

Tourists flock the country to experience wild life and are in awe of the beauty that South Africa has to offer.

Many of the rich build a second home in South Africa to get away from there winter months in there own country.

Students who finish there internships often have the choice to practice in South Africa and many of them initially do.

South Africa has grown from strength to strength since Nelson Mandela was released on February 11th 1990.

Yes, there are many challenges ahead and the echoes of apartheid or cause to many of these challenges, like proper education and housing for all.

Crime is a factor in the bigger cities but is it not in any other city? Be street wise by not walking alone at night and never to look like a vulnerable tourist. Explore South Africa with a friend and put your big flashy camera in your bag, don't flaunt your jewelry. Blend with everyone else and you will be just fine. Criminals look for opportunity; simply don't give it to them.

When you actually take the time and explore South Africa you will find small towns with no fences, were people still go to bed with there doors unlocked. Towns that are less than an hour's drive from major cities. Why aren't stories like these printed in newspapers? They don't attract enough readers.

People are afraid of what they do not know, but when they experience it for themselves it's not so bad after all.
