The city of Port Elizabeth lies at the centre of the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. Port Elizabeth and the surrounding areas are known as Nelson Mandela Bay, named after the area's most famous inhabitant

A temperate Mediterranean climate means that both Port Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela Bay can be enjoyed at any time of year.

Naturally, summer time in South Africa is warmest, with temperatures generally ranging from 24 to 30ºC. The summer months run from November to March, with December and January typically the warmest months.

The autumn months of April to June cool down a little, although the weather tends to remain pleasant with sunshine prevailing.

The winter months of June, July and August are the coolest, with the drop in temperature most noticeable in the evening. Winter days in South Africa are still sunny however, and you can still make the most of all Port Elizabeth has to offer.

If you are a lover of the great outdoors then the Eastern Cape region will hold lots of appeal. Port Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela Bay hug the coastline of South Africa and more than 40km of beaches and bays make this a sand and sea lover's paradise.

The city is set on the shores of Algoa Bay, meaning there is a wide array of water based activities to enjoy, from jet skiing, sailing and surfing to horse riding on the beach. The clear waters of the Indian Ocean are perfect for diving and there are numerous ship wrecks to see, as well as coral reefs to admire.

Jeffreys Bay has been popular with surfers for years so head here if you are searching for the perfect wave. King's Beach, Hobie Beach, Humewood Beach and Pollock Beach are all firm favourites with for sunbathing and swimming whereas Oyster Bay offers a more secluded getaway.

Oyster Bay may not be quite as easily accessed as the other beaches but is well worth the effort. Perfect for swimming, surfing and fishing, head to this hidden spot if you fancy escaping the crowds.

Take a trip to the promenade where you will find a lot of Port Elizabeth's eateries. Cuisines from across the globe can be sampled and seafood fans will be delighted by the fresh fish and shellfish on offer.

After the sun sets, the bars and clubs open their doors so you can enjoy either a relaxed drink or big night out, whichever takes your fancy. For a night out with a difference, head to Port Elizabeth's traditional Victorian style casino where you can try your luck on the roulette wheel.

Going back to the great outdoors, Port Elizabeth is laden with parks, hiking trails and safari lodges to keep you busy. Port Elizabeth is home to Africa's 'Big Five -: lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos - so you should be in with a good chance of spotting one if you visit.
