Learning how to expertly macro as a Zerg is undoubtedly one of the most difficult aspects of Starcraft 2.  Zerg micro and macro is thought by many to be the most challenging in the game, but also the most rewarding if you are able to stick with it.  The rationale Zerg macro skills is so tough to master is because it is so fundamentally different than how the other races macro.  With the Protoss and Terran races, the quantity of mineral patches you are able to develop becomes the biggest constraint on soldier and building development.  With the Zerg race, the largest constraint is the number of Hatcheries.

Battling with the Zerg well means mastering macro, because a great Zerg macro player will dominate the other races, particularly if he can maintain three or four hatcheries and can get to the end game (around 12 minutes) with a decent economy.  Because the Zerg build all of their units from only one building, they can tech switch instantly.  Use of the Larvae injection in combination with the instant tech switch assists you to develop a massive quantity of soldiers.

Zerg Macro Strategy - Spawn Larva

A primary strategy that will assist you is to use a timer, program it to ring every forty seconds, and to cast Spawn Larva as soon as it goes off.  Perfecting the Spawn Larva ability is one of the most basic skills of great Zerg macro.

Zerg Macro Tactic - Early Expansion

In comparison to the other species, the Zerg are superior in resource collection and troop development.  This should be used to your benefit by growing your base early, so you can produce even more soldiers and minerals from the beginning of the game.  Since Protoss and Terran late game units are very tough for the Zerg to beat - the key is to expand soon and harass them enough so they cannot get to the late game.  Another key difficulty of expanding at the start of the battle is that if you create an additional Hatchery, you delay your Lair upgrade and won't have anti-air support.  This is another reason that this tactic only works while harassing your opponent - you keep him from developing an early air attack that you are basically defenseless against.  However, if you are able to successfully spread out early and then upgrade your Lair, you will have much better mineral and Vespine gas gathering and troop construction abilities, which will go far towards guaranteeing victory.  The Zerg Scouting Guide will show you the most effective strategies for scouting and harassing your enemy.

Zerg Macro Techniques - Expanding Creep

One of the keys to being successful is concentrating on developing your Creep.  In addition to the fact that your structures need it to survive, it increases the speed of your units from 30% - 170% (for the Queen) and therefore provides you with a large advantage in fights on Creep.  It's vital to have more than a single source of Creep while placing your buildings, so if one of your sources is destroyed your opponent does not destroy your buildings too.  Keep in mind that Creep expands much faster with multiple Creep Tumors.  This is a great tactic to use while attempting to fix damage done by your opponent after an attack.
