Remember, puppies should be at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned before separating them from their mothers.
The Shelter
If you go down to your local pet shelter you'll find many pets in need of a good home. The good thing about getting a puppy from the shelter is that these animals need a good home, but on the downside you have to realize that many animals that are a given up to shelters are there often there because of past behavioral problems or sometimes even health problems. Such if you choose to get a puppy from the shelter make sure you get it examined thoroughly by the veterinarian.
Rescues
Rescues are another good place to find dogs. Rescues are organizations that help pets that have been abused or abandoned by their owners. Normally these dogs might be a little on the thin side but in general they are pretty healthy dogs that just need a little love.
Pet Store
The pet store is probably a more expensive option, but you often have a wider variety of puppies to choose from. However, you have to be careful because many these puppies tend to develop upper respiratory infections while at the pet store.
Classified Ads
Classified ads are sometimes the place to find a good deal on a dog. But again, you have to be careful and ask specifically why is the owner is giving the dog away.
Take your time when choosing a new puppy, this will help prevent you from getting a dog that has a potential behavior problem or worse.
