The county town of Lancaster, Lancashire, England lies on the banks of the River Lune in this northwestern part of the country. It has a current population of around 50,000 people, and is part of the larger City of Lancaster local government district, giving the area a total population of nearly 135,000 people.

Interestingly, Lancaster is the town which gives Lancashire its name. There are also several ties to the British monarchy between the town and the royals, including the royal House of Lancaster, which gave England three of its ruling kings in past history. These were Henry IV, V and VI, ruling from 1399 to 1461, all together, and in 1470 to 1471, for one additional year.

The city's name was first mentioned in the 11th century property survey of William I (the Conqueror), the Domesday Book. The town is also famous as being the representative of the red rose during the Wars of the Roses, where Lancaster and the town of York (the white rose) pursued rival claims to the throne of England. The clashes occurred over parts of three decades, beginning in 1455.

The town was granted its first charter in 1193, and Lancaster Castle - a structure of architectural significance - was partly built up in the 1300s. The castle was also the site of a series of witch trials in 1612. Lancaster also has many fine examples of Georgian era architecture, in addition to structures from various other eras.

The ceremonial and non-metropolitan county of Lancashire lies in the northwest of England. It is a large county, population-wise, with about 1.5 million people calling it home. This ranks it 8th in size among all counties in the country. It was also officially established as a county back in 1182. Its size was greatly reduced in 1974. Both the county town and the county itself are fine examples of typical English life.
