Obesity is a serious problem with children of all ages. In the USA, obesity is increasing more and more nowadays. Obesity is a simple medical condition to define but one of the most difficult for lasting treatment. Well over 30% of children and young teens are obese. A poor diet and a lack of exercising is the main reason for over 300,000 deaths annually. Obesity in children is much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise.

Here is the definition of obesity

A few pounds of extra weight does not suggest obesity. However those extras may indicate a trend pattern to gain weight easily over time and a need for a change in diet and possibly initiating an exercise plan. Generally, though children are not considered obese until the weight is at least 15% higher than what is recommended for the given height and body type.

Obesity, most commonly begins in childhood between the ages of 5 and 7, and during early adolescence. Many studies show that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 14 have a 85% chance of becoming an obese adult.

What causes obesity today

Obesity is complex and includes genetic, biological, behavioral factors. Obesity typically occurs when a person eats more calories than the body can burn up. If one parent is obese, there is over a 50% chance that their children will be obese. When both parents are obese, the children have well above 80% chance to be obese. Although many different medical disorders can contribute to obesity, less than 1% of all obesity is basically caused by physical problems. Obesity at childhood and early adolescence can many times be related to the following areas-

bad eating habits
overeating typically
lack of exercise
family history
medical illnesses
medications contribute
stressful life events or serious changes
low self esteem
depression / emotional problem areas

There are many risk factors with obesity. Physical threats and resulting consequences as follows-

- increased risk of heart disease

- high blood pressure/ hypertension

- diabetes

- breathing problems

- problems sleeping

Children and adolescent obesity is associated with increased risk of emotional problems. Teens with weight problems tend to have much lower self-esteem and be less popular with their peers. Depression, anxiety, and compulsive disorder.

How can obesity be managed and treated -
In the absence of a physical disorder, the way to lose weight is by reducing the number of the calorie-intake and to increase the level of physical activity. Lasting weight loss can only happen when there is self-motivation.

Steps to be taken -

change current eating habits

plan meals / better food selections

control portions / quantity means less calories

physical activity- go for a walk

eat meals as a family

Obesity in many cases becomes a lifelong issue. The reason most obese children put weight back on, their lost pounds is that after they have reached their goal, they go back to their old habits. We are simply creatures of habit. An obese adolescent must therefore learn to eat and enjoy healthy foods in balanced portions and to exercise to maintain the desired weight. Parents of an obese child can improve their self esteem by supporting their positive qualities rather than just focusing on their weight/ obesity issue.
