The town of Holywell, Flintshire, Wales has the distinction of being the fifth-largest of all the towns in the county, which lies in the northern region of country. Lying to the west of an estuary that abuts a 70-mile long river, the Dee, Holywell has a current population of around 7, 600. The town is the birthplace of the famous Broadway and film actor Jonathan Pryce, of "Miss Saigon" and various movies.
The origins of the town's name comes from a famous water hole, St. Winefride's Well, which is considered a holy well. This water hole is completely surrounded by a chapel. There is evidence of the well's renown even back to Roman times, and it has been a site for Christians wishing to make a pilgrimage since at least 660. In Wales, it is considered one of the designated "Seven Wonders."
Holywell is divided into four areas, including the town's center. Like many such towns, there is a wealthier enclave, Pen-y-Maes. It sits on the northeast side of Holywell, with the largest of the other three areas, The Holway, located on the west side of town. There are a number of smaller villages lying within the immediate vicinity of the town. All are of much smaller populations.
Holywell today features a number of small shops and stores, many of which cater to the tourist industry. Additionally, it also plays host to several large national chain stores. All of the small villages or other communities within a six mile radius of Holywell are interconnected via a local regularly-scheduled bus service system.
The Welsh county of Flintshire lies in the northeastern reaches of the country. It is ranked sixth in population in Wales, with 150, 500 people calling it home. The historic county from which it takes its name had markedly different borders than the version existing today. It is also known as being a prime location for several different industries and tech services, including a number of Internet stores.
