The town of Polegate, East Sussex, England lies in the south-central portion of the county. It has a current population of nearly 8, 100 people within its 2.8 square mile land area. Lying about 5 miles to the north from the seaside resort town Eastbourne, it is generally considered to be a part of that larger town's metropolitan area.
The town started its life as not much more than a small settlement. It was first known in the 13th century as being an area that was occupied by certain orders of monks, who were members of a Catholic religious community. There are still two historic structures remaining from those days, a chapel and the Otteham Court, of which the chapel was a part.
The town would have continued its smallish existence had it not been for the arrival of the railways during the 1840s. It began to grow exponentially for a time, taking advantage of its place as a rail junction that had a significant freight terminal. This entity served Hailsham, a market town located near to Polegate, and also a brick making industry which had laid down roots in the town.
There is a walking and hiking trail that runs through the town, the Cuckoo Trail, which runs approximately 14 miles or so, from a suburb of Eastbourne to a small market town, Heathfield. It also passes through a couple of other small villages as it winds its way through the area. The town is also served by the A22 road, a two-lane major roadway running from London all the way to Eastbourne.
East Sussex, the ceremonial and non-metropolitan county which plays host to Polegate, has a population numbering around 762, 000 residents. It sits in the southeastern part of the country, and has a picturesque and scenic length of English Channel coastline. Both the town of Polegate and the county of East Sussex are fine examples of classic England.
