The Ardeche is a 'department' of France that is situated about 150 kilometres north of the Mediterranean sea, heading towards central France.

It is one of the most scenic parts of France, and includes a natural park (the Parc Naturel des Monts d'Ardeche) and a very dramatic canyon, called the Ardeche Gorges.

The Monts d'Ardeche are a series of steep, tree covered hills that follow the Ardeche river down from the mountains of the Massif Central towards the sea. There is a road that also follows down the valley and is well worth following when you visit the region.

The Ardeche gorges are also on the same river, but now it is much wider. Over millions of years the river has carved the gorge through the landscape, and the cliffs either side of the river now reach up to 600 metres in height. The surrounding landscape is dense forest, and the countryside around the gorges is very attractive.

There is a 'scenic route' that follows along the top of the gorge, with numerous places to stop and admire the canyon below. Alternatively, you can hire a canoe and sail along the river itself, with the gorges rising high on either side.

Apart from the scenic highlights of the Ardeche, there are also many small villages and hamlets set in the landscape and waiting to be discovered and explored.

The local Ardeche tourist board has designated seventeen of the best of these villages as 'villages of character' and visiting a few of these should be a key highlight of your visit. They are spread over the whole department, but most are in the south, and several are within easy reach of the ends of the gorges themselves.

Some of the villages that are particularly recommended include Saint-Montan, Vogué and Balazuc. Many of the villages developed in medieval times around the base of the local castle, so many of them still have a ruined castle poised on the hill above the village, adding further to the character of the place.

Visit our website to learn more about tourist attractions in the Ardeche, and in particular the impressive natural stone arch at Pont d'Arc at the western end of the gorges.
