You don't drive into Wales so much as glide over either of the two Severn Bridges, a mere hour and a half along the M4 from London. Your flight-path along the ‘old' bridge to Chepstow lands you almost directly at the gates of the Marriott St Pierre.

 

From there you can take off again along the road westwards to Newport and the Celtic Manor Resort, or go north through the beautiful Wye Valley to a Rolls-Royce amongst courses. You can even fly in direct to Cardiff International Airport. Whatever your direction of travel, you'll land yourself outstanding golf.

 

The Celtic Manor Resort, venue for The 2010 Ryder Cup, is just off the M4 on the approach to Newport. It says a lot for Celtic Manor that in its relatively short life it has established itself as one of the world's leading golf resorts, complete with a new course and clubhouse purpose-built for The Ryder Cup.

The Marriott St Pierre, host of the Dunlop Masters, Curtis Cup and Solheim Cup, is another golfing gold. And no golfer's wish list would be complete without including the Rolls of Monmouth set in 600 acres of tranquil parkland. The clubhouse is the former workshop and garage of the 18th-century mansion, home of Charles Stuart Rolls, the early aviator and motoring pioneer who formed the famous partnership with Henry Royce.

 

The welcoming South Wales Valleys begin just to the north of Newport. Here you'll find a wide choice of scenic courses, including Bryn Meadows near Hengoed and West Monmouthshire at Brynmawr (where you can take yourttee shot from the highest tee in Wales and England).

 

It's the same story north of Cardiff, which abounds with courses in the hills above the historic communities of Pontypridd and Rhondda. At Merthyr Tydfil, the Cleveland Hibore XLS Tour Driver capital' of the world, you can enjoy the moorland delights of Morlais Castle and admire the views into the Brecon Beacons National Park at the same time.

 

In and around Cardiff there are no less than 18 golf courses, so when you stay in Wales's dynamic capital city you're truly spoilt for choice. Just off junction 34 of the M4, the splendid Vale Hotel, Golf & Spa Resort at Hensol Park offers luxury golf at its finest.

 

Further west the sea begins to play its part in the shape and character of the courses. Some of the best are to be found in places of natural coastal beauty like Southerndown. Pyle & Kenfig, described by designer P MacKenzie Ross as a ‘golfer's paradise', has a real celebrity as a close neighbour - Royal Porthcawl, whose first three holes alone earn it a place amongst the world's best golf courses.
