Many years ago, when cinema was first invented, it was the only way for many people to see films, as most people didn’t have TVs in their own homes. For both TV and cinema, the problem for a long time was that you needed to watch a film at a certain time. With the invention of home video systems such as VHS and Betamax, movie fans were able to either record films from the TV or rent films from a video library. The Emergence of DVDs


Once the DVD was invented, home video quality took a giant leap forward. This enabled anyone to play high quality digital video in the comfort of their own home. As long as you didn't scratch the discs, DVDs remained at the same quality, as opposed to gradually wearing out like VHS cassettes would. From the 1990's onwards, DVDs became extremely popular amongst movie fans. This is our first review of a wine from Montenegro, a small country in southeastern Europe that was part of Yugoslavia. Montenegro has been producing wine for more than two thousand years, so perhaps it's time to take a look at one of their products. This particular wine is produced from the red Vranac grape whose name means black stallion. So let's guess that we are looking at a powerful wine. The company's vineyard is one of the largest in Europe, containing over 10 million vines.

Palntaze Monte Cheval Vranac, 2006 11.5% alcohol about $ 8.00

Let's start with the marketing materials. Tasting Note: Medium garnet; leather and earth with a hint of plum and spice; earthy dried fruit flavor with a hint of spice. Serving Suggestion: Stew and casseroles. And now for my review.

At first tasting the wine was dark and oaky with round tannins. It was mouth filling and chewy but relatively short. The initial meal involved slow-cooked beef ribs and potatoes. I tasted cherries and chocolate. Its palate cleansing acidity was good because the meat was fat but this Vranac seemed to fade away. It did not pick up when I added spicy green jalapeno pepper sauce to the meat.

The second meal consisted of commercially barbecued chicken thighs in a light herb sauce and deli potato salad. The wine was powerful, but perhaps a bit too acidic. It showed dark fruit but didn't overpower this lightly flavored dish.

The final meal was based on Merguez, North African spicy lamb sausage. The wine was mouth filling and I tasted stewed fruits. It cut the grease and, believe me, this meal was greasy. The deli potato salad muted the wine. When I added spicy green jalapeno pepper sauce this time the wine stepped into the background and its fruit was gone.

I finished the tasting with two cheeses. The first cheese was a marbled cheddar. The wine was dark and tasted of cherries and plums. It seemed well balanced. With a sheep's milk feta cheese the wine lost a lot of its character. This cheese was too much for this wine.

Final verdict. I won't buy this wine again. It is better than many $ 8 wines but with all the cheap wines out there, I won't hold the presses for this one.

Women, so we're led to believe, are seduced by branding and advertising. They're the ones who put their names on waiting lists for this or that cult handbag and scour the stores for this season's must-have jeans.

Not so for blokes. They've got better things to do than follow fashion. And they'll wear anything. Right?

Well, not all of them, according to the handful of Sydney retailers who are doing a nice trade selling to (gasp!) Aussie men with a taste for international high fashion. We're talking serious labels here Dolce & Gabbana, Helmut Lang, Marc Jacobs, Comme des Garons and Paul Smith. Labels where the price of a shirt can exceed your weekly mortgage repayment.

Who are the members of this male high-fashion society? "There's no typical profile," says Robby Ingham, the veteran retailer, whose two Sydney stores stock men's ranges that include Comme des Garons, Dries Van Noten, Paul Smith and Stone Island (which account for almost half of his total sales).

"He could be anything from 25 to 60 years old," says Ingham. "He could be the mechanic down the road or a billionaire. What he does for

a job and what he earns makes no difference. Men rarely shop here just because they have the money. It's more because they've got an interest in clothes and fashion."

David Bush, general manager of men's apparel and accessories at David Jones agrees. "I don't think it has anything to do with a man's salary. Men buy these types of labels because they are interested in looking their best. It doesn't make any difference whether they're a banker or

a waiter."

Botha: It was another cliffhanger and we were lucky that it went our way. Alam played really well, they set the game up nicely and we were lucky that we are the happier side at the end of the day. Amla is a world class player and his innings was world class.

Afridi:The body language of the Proteas was good, their fielding was top class and they backed each other. Our batting approach was negative and fielding is our major concern too.

 

Hashim Amla: Had a good start and the wicket deteriorated a bit, we did well to score 228. At one stage, I didn't know what's a good score but when the message came from the dressing room that 220 would be a good score, we were allowed to settle down and deal in singles.

You can enhance the value of your services as a technical communicator and writer if you learn how to draw labels.

Thousands of companies out there need labels to market their products.

While some of these labels are rather elaborate and require the skills of a trained graphic artist, not all labels require that level of artistic skill.

There are many businesses in the industrial, manufacturing and hi-tech fields that require simple labels consisting of the product name, product number and description, UL logo, a bar code, and similar basic information that you can easily create and supply in the form of a label.  I have drawn hundreds of such labels myself during my career for satisfied customers although I do not have a professional graphic design background.

Here are 7 useful productivity tips to create such basic labels in Adobe Illustrator:

1] Use the Rectangle Tool (M) for creating a precisely-measured label box. Select the Rectangle tool from your tool box and double click it on your art-board to display the Rectangle dialog box. Enter the precise Width and Height measurements into the respective fields. When you click OK, the Illustrator will create the exact rectangle described in the product specs.

2] Use the Stroke tab (select Window > Stroke from the main menu, or Ctrl + F10) to determine the weight of the label border. To create a label with no border weight (invisible border), select the border box you've created and enter "0" into the Stroke Weight field. Then press Enter. To create a dashed-line border, enter appropriate values into the Dashed Line fields and experiment.

3] Use Guide Lines to align your label box and its components. Select View > Show Rulers (or Ctrl + R) from the main menu to display the horizontal and vertical rulers. Then click your cursor on a ruler and drag it down or to the right to create a ruler. Pull it down to its desired position. Use the View > Guides menu to hide, lock or clear all the guides.

4] Use the Align tab (select Window > Align from the main menu , or Shift + F7) to align the various visual components of your label. This comes very handy when aligning label elements too small to be aligned correctly by the naked eye, even when you magnify them by using Illustrator's navigation controls (Window > Navigator).

5] Use the Type tab (Window > Type, or Ctrl + T) to easily control your font type, font size and style, paragraph alignment, line leading size, kerning, and other useful typographical features of your label text.

6] Always create a Status Log table for your label and save and distribute your label with it. This log should show the date on which the label was created, its version number, its product or archive number (if any), the person who drafted it, the person who approved it (your client or manager), UL certification date or number, and any other relevant label information. Such information becomes priceless to understand what has been done to the label when it is modified at a feature date. It creates accountability and transparency.

7] If your client or printer asks for them, create Crop Marks around the label by first selecting the label's borders (whether they are visible or not) and then selecting Object > Crop Area > Make from the main menu. To remove the crop marks, select Object > Crop Area > Release.

P.S. The crop marks will determine whether only the label itself (with crop marks) or all the other relevant information on the artboard like the Status Log table also gets published (without crop marks) when you generate a PDF copy of your illustration.
