What better way to invigorate the senses than on a cruise to the Far East? This week we travel to Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea following last week's visit to China.
There are numerous port cities in the Far East with historical and cultural importance, and - depending on your cruise liner - you might get to visit a good number of these as part of your holiday package.
In Japan, for example, Nagasaki is a major port city that is also deeply significant due to being bombed during World War II. It has a Peace Park marking the event, while other attractions in and around the metropolis include the oldest wooden Christian church in the country, known as O-ura Tenshu-do, together with a host of natural sights - including a volcano and Saikai National Park.
In Thailand, Bangkok is a great stop for those looking to experience the country's rich culture, architecture and cuisine. The city is home to a number of temples, parks and canals, as well as major attractions such as the National Museum, the Grand Palace and the Phra Sumeru Fortress.
Elsewhere in the Far East, the unique fusion of old and new in Singapore is likely to be a major draw for cruise goers. The city-state features eye-wateringly high skyscrapers, serene parks and gardens, bustling shops and restaurants, and arts and culture venues that can be said to be works of art in their own right.
Further north, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is another potential cruise stop that melds tradition and modernity to offer a unique holiday destination. Immerse yourself in the city's culture by visiting the Islamic Arts Museum, the National Art Gallery and its many examples of breathtaking architecture, or check out the area's busy markets and shops to see if you can haggle yourself a bargain.
Further east, South Korea is home to no fewer than 11 ports, with Incheon perhaps being the most well-known of these. Sights that can be found in and around the city include Songdo Amusement Park, Ganghwado Island - which harbors a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.
Virgin Holidays Cruises is the place to visit for a Singapore cruise, Japan cruise or other Far East cruise destinations.
