M.I.A. recently performed a free show for her fans in New York at the Brooklyn Bowl. The event took place on Oct. 6, attracting throngs of M.I.A. followers. The singer had the plans in the works for a couple months, tweeting on July 26: "I'm gonna do a free show in NYC when I get back, though I don't have powers over rain! If you still have the heard tickets [you're] free!"
M.I.A. is currently touring in support of her latest album, titled Maya. She has U.S. tour dates booked through October and in November she's heading to Europe. If you don't have plans for the new year, don't miss her performance at Australia's Big Day Out. M.I.A. tickets are now available at StubHub.
As a bonus to her fans, M.I.A. is also offering up a collection of free unreleased songs during her national tour. She was quoted on MOG.com as saying, "These are not videos, these are not releases - these are what are on my laptop. I'm cleaning out the creative closet." The singer is buying the domains for the song titles and making them gifs and uploading the songs and the visuals. She's already released several tunes and there are more to come in the following weeks. Check out her website for further information.
Before she became involved in the music industry, M.I.A. (then known by her given name Maya Arupragasam) moved around frequently with her parents, from London to Sri Lanka and Madras, India. In fact, she became interested and supportive of the Tamil rebellion, a movement that her father was involved with over the years. M.I.A.'s interest in music started when she began working with the group Elastica and she ultimately cultivated her own sound, which emerged as a blend of several different genres including electronic, hip-hop, funk and dancehall.
After signing a contract with XL, she released her debut record, Arular, in 2005. The album featured an energetic vibe and insightful lyrics. It proved to be more meaningful than your average pop release, taking issue with the violence and suffering endured by those in Sri Lanka. Some of the tracks included "Pull up the People," "Bucky Done Gun" and "Galang."
Two years later, M.I.A. was back with her sophomore effort, Kala. She was responsible for the production of most of the tracks, but also received help from Timbaland, Diplo and Switch. The single "Paper Planes" became a smash hit in 2008 and several her songs were used in the Academy Award-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.
Her latest album Maya dropped in 2010 and once again emphasized her creative skills as an artist. Take a listen to tracks like "Lovalot," "Born Free" and "Space" in order to fully appreciate her passion for storytelling.
M.I.A. is giving fans a chance to rock out to her music live with her current tour. See her take the stage in the U.S. or in Europe in the coming weeks and sing along to some of her best jams. Tickets are now selling on StubHub!
