Waikiki beach is the most popular Hawaiian beach. It comprises of five small beaches on the southern shores of Oahu. The area is normally bustling with tourists who want to enjoy the sun, swim and may be even learn to surf a little on small waves. It's a great place to be in especially if you are into enjoying good crowds. The Waikiki Beach has been recently renovated and now has plenty to offer. You can lodge, shop, dine and play here.

Waikiki is not the only beach which merits visiting. Infact there are plenty of other beaches you can choose from.

Windward shore

The Eastern Shore has the best of swimming beaches as it is the calmest shore on Oahu.

Waimanalo Beach is a local secret that most tourists are not aware of. It is located in the Waimanalo town and is a native favorite. It is nearly two miles of wide strip of white sand. It is among the best swimming locations of the island of Oahu.

Kailua Beach is famous for windsurfing. It's in the Kailua town. The beach has lovely white sands and decent waves. The more adventurous can swim to an off shore island too.

Leeward Shore

Beware: the locals are not too fond of tourists and several rental cars have been reportedly been broken into.

Pokai Bay Beach Park, south of Makaha offers some great swimming on the western shore of Oahu.

North shore

Beware: this shore is known for its surfing. It is really rough during the winters with 30 feet high waves. Be really careful during these months.

Sunset Beach Park has fabulous waves of 15-20 feet during winter and a few great swells in the summer too. Parking here is very limited.

Waimea Bay Beach Park has the largest waves in the world. Many as high as 30 feet tall. Only the best surfers can cope here in the winter months.

Ali'i Beach Park, a little north of Hale'iwa, is the only beach suitable for swimming in the north. Though winter months can be tricky here too.

South shore

All the hotels in Honolulu are located on the southern shore. The beaches are often crowded, though easily accessible and have calm waters.

Ala Moana Beach is downtown Honululu and right across the Ala Moana shopping center. Large picnic areas along with tennis courts make it very popular spot among locals. Kids love to swim in these waters but it is the right place for relaxed picnics.

Hanauma Bay Nature Park located at eastern side of Hawaii Kai. It's a sheltered nature reserve in a sunken crater. The volcano is now extinct. Non-residents above the age of 13 are charged an entry fee of $ 5 and have to pay $ 1 for parking too. But it is a small price to pay if you love snorkeling. The calm and clear water is shallow and a treat of colorful tropical fishes awaits you. You can enjoy it more, if you get there early, as it gets really crowded soon and then the water becomes unclear.

A steep walk takes you to the water, and if you cannot manage it you can always take the tram. You can even rent snorkeling gear, if you have not brought your own.

The Oahu experience is not limited to the Waikiki beach, so go ahead and enjoy the beaches all around Waikiki, whether on the north, south, windward or leeward side.
