Those blessed with rich dark brown skin often feel they must lighten their skin in order to wear flattering make up.  Not true at all!

Dark skin has the richest skin tones, and responds well to subtle colours as well as shimmering gloss and sparkle.  For women with dark skin, the rainbow is your palette.

In order to get the best results from your make up, start with a good base.  Foundation, eyeliner and lipliner are the cornerstone for setting your tone, and you can add colour afterwards with blush and eyeshadow.

Your foundation should be water based, as darker skin tends to be reflective of light, making the skin look oily or shiny.  A water based foundation that matches your natural skin tone, followed by a powder finish will even out your face and give you a good base to start with.

Rim the eyes with kohl liners or liquid liners.  Your eyes are dramatic, so lining them with a deep colour - black, brown or navy, will enhance your eyes and give depth to them.

Your lips need a good liner too, which will give them definition and shape.  Choose a lip liner that will closely match the shade of lipstick you will be wearing.  As a rule, chocolates and burgundies on the lips are charming for dark skinned women.

Once you've got the basics down, you can have fun with shadows to accessorize your look.  Earthy tones, such as sandy brown or jade green will make your eyes pop.  But you are lucky enough that you can also wear frosty pinks, whites or even silver.  Applying a thick and velvety mascara in a deep black is the last touch to finish off your glamourous eyes.

Your cheeks can range from peach to pink depending on your mood, and some of the lighter caramel blushes might suit you as well.

If you are lucky enough to have dark skin, don't try and hide it, show it off.  Start with the basics and then choose your colour spectrum, be it neutral shades or bright and bold.  The warm, earthy tones of your skin make it easy for you to be at your best in almost any colour you choose.
