The so-called 'Mother City', is South Africa's favourite city – and it's not hard to see why. The temperate, Mediterranean-style climate is enjoyable in the extreme and with old Georgian buildings, sophisticated eating places, leafy piazzas and stacks of cultural style, the whole city is a feat for the senses.

At the heart of Cape Town and an ever-present backdrop is Table Mountain, the flat-topped symbol of the city that's as outstanding in the rain as in the sunshine. Embark here with a six minute cable-car experience up the mountain and you are going to very easily get your bearings.

The city is flanked on two sides by beaches with the balmy waters of the Indian Ocean and the crystal clear Atlantic lapping the long sands that have made Capetonians a metropolis of beach-lovers. To the south-west and a part day tour away is the Cape of Good Hope; below is Robben Island, former prison home to Nelson Mandela and another must-see place.

The South Africa Museum, St George's Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament are major attractions in the old town, together with the prominent Green Market and landmark hotel the Mount Nelson. When the sun goes down the action moves to the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, where dining establishments, cafes and retailers line a harbour packed with yachts and fishing vessels.

Following a couple of days in the urban centre, head north-east along the mountain tops to the wineries and Dutch-style homesteads of the South African wine growing region. At is heart, just 18 miles out of The Mother City, is Stellenbosch additionally recognised for its university and ample colonial-era buildings.

Various estates here and in neighbouring Franschoek are open to travellers for trips and tastings. An increasing number have extremely good places to eat and hotel accommodation, too, and a number of days checking out the Cape Winelands has become a must for visitors to Cape Town and the Western Cape .
