How many times a year does the average San Franciscan make it out to wine country? Reports show that San Franciscan’s make their escape an average of TWO times per year. That isn’t that much considering they live so close. If they only go twice, they need to make those two times count. From are going to visit.San Francisco, people have lots of options. People can go with a tour operator or if they have a car they can drive themselves. But, let’s face it…. Why do most people go to wine country? TO DRINK WINE! So why would anyone want to drive themselves to wine country when they could easily jump on a shuttle and have someone else do the hard work. In addition to getting there, before going you need to decide where you are going to go and what wineries you are going to visit.

Wine country consists of countless wine growing regions….Every county surrounding San Francisco grows grapes and makes wine. You have the Santa Cruz Mountains to the south, you have Livermore to the East, you have Sonoma to the North and you have Napa to the Northeast. And within each of these places you have countless sub regions and appellations, filled with more wineries than you could visit in a week. Napa Valley alone has close to 500 wineries. How does one know where to go? How does the inexperienced wine drinker know what’s best or where to spend their day? These are all tough decisions that have to be made to ensure a pleasant experience.

I believe that these are all things best left to an expert to decide. And for that reason, among some of the others previously mentioned (ie not driving), I would go with a trip organizer that provides transportation. If you do your research and find a trusted tour operator, you can trust them to bring you to the places you want to see…..I recommend you find a tour operator who will bring you to the special places in wine country, the diamonds in the rough.

So now, we have decided to be driven, by a respected tour operator that can take you to those special places off the beaten path. Now we have to decide how we want to get around. There is a bus, a limo, or… hey a BIKE! What better way to experience wine country vacations then through pedaling through it first hand. Get you blood pumping and burn up some of those calories as you indulge. Why go to wine country and sit in a vehicle the whole time— I mean let’s face it… the reason you left San Francisco was to see wine country and be in wine country. What better way to do that then bike through it. On a bike vacations you smell and hear things that you would miss in the car. You go at a slower pace so that you can truly see the things you are passing. You see the grapes on the vine and you can even run into the vineyards and pull a few grapes off the vine without anyone noticing.

So now, we’ve decided…. Get a ride, have someone plan the route and get on a bike…. But that seems so complicated….It seems like too many steps and too much planning. What if I were to tell you that there is a new company based out of San Francisco that does all of it. They pick you up in the city, take you up to wine country, put you on a bike, and lead you from winery to winery. They even bring you a delicious lunch to accompany your wine— and if you decide to purchase wine along the way, or drink too much to continue biking, they have a support shuttle that follows the group to pick up your purchases— or you! And then, when all is said and done— and you are happily buzzed, they load you into the shuttle and drive you home. It doesn’t get any easier than that. For the best way to experience wine country, check out Gears and Grapes Getaways Inc. Their headquarters are in SOMA but they have a few locations where they pick up and drop off in the city. You can find them online at www.gearsandgrapes.com Enjoy your trip to wine country and don’t forget to let us know how it went!
