Noosa Heads
by avlxyz

This is one of life's big questions for me recently. As an actors headshot photographer in London it's a question I'm asking myself more and more. Why is the top of the head missing or, why isn't it in the photograph? It seems among some headshot photographers it seems to be a growing trend. I'm not sure if it's that some of them do not fully understand the casting headshot and it use, maybe some photographers feel that they want influence current trends or maybe some just want to be different and stand out. Who knows?

• But why I ask myself is this the case?

• Who thought of this trend?

• Did young men with receding hairlines ask for it?

• Did someone who had a scar or an ugly growth insist it?

There was a time when I used to shoot mainly models for the London agencies and within that arena it was quite acceptable to use a headshot with part of or even the entire top of the head selectively cropped out. This was used to give a stylish or stronger look, perhaps the crop focused intently on the eyes of the model as in a beauty shot. Whatever the reason was it was accepted as a type of shot to have in a model's portfolio. In a model's book there was usually 10 to 20 shots in various poses and from various shoots and photographers, the whole idea being to give a good broad look at the models capabilities. Whether they could do catwalk, editorial, lingerie, high or cutting edge fashion or whether their skin was good enough for really close up beauty work.

This is not the case with an actor's headshot, it needs to be a true representation of who that person really is, and it must look like them warts and all. If it's a young man and he has a receding hairline then he has to show that in the headshot. Maybe another person has a birthmark just inside his or her hairline. In all honesty you need to show that, you must be true to yourself and true to your headshot.

What if you're simply having a bad hair day can you crop it out of the headshot - absolutely not. Get your hair fixed, you should really have sorted this out in your preparation for your shoot beforehand. What if the photographer suggests it to you? I would say sure but only after you've got me a great normal headshot first that I'm really happy with.

Even though I've stated quite clearly why I think it's not right to use a headshot that has part or all of your head cropped out ,there is an exception.

When an actors wants to have a headshot that they can use for more commercial work, by that I mean or TV commercials or presenting work. Often they have to compete with models that can 'act, or present a bit' and in this environment a stronger more stylish headshot can be useful and help to get them noticed. It should not be used as a main actor's headshot.
